Arlington National – Tomb of the Unknowns

We’re proud of our men and women who have served, who do serve and who will serve no matter where they may be….Amen
images (2)
This is really an awesome sight to watch if you’ve never had the chance .
Fascinating. Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

1. How many steps does the guard take during his walk across the tomb of the Unknowns and why?

21 steps: It alludes to the twenty-one gun salute which
is the highest honor given any military or foreign dignitary.

2. How long does he hesitate after his about face to begin his return walk and why?

21 seconds for the same reason as answer number 1

3. Why are his gloves wet?

His gloves are moistened to prevent his losing his grip on the rifle.

4. Does he carry his rifle on the same shoulder all the time
and, if not, why not?

He carries the rifle on the shoulder away from the tomb. After his march across the path, he executes an about face and moves the rifle to the outside shoulder.

5. How often are the guards changed?

Guards are changed every thirty minutes, twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year.

6. What are the physical traits of the guard limited to?

For a person to apply for guard duty at the tomb, he must be between 5′ 10′ and 6′ 2′ tall and his waist size cannot exceed 30. They must commit 2 years of life to guard the tomb, live in a barracks under the tomb, and cannot drink any alcohol on or off duty for the rest of their lives. They cannot swear in public for the rest of their lives and cannot disgrace the uniform or the tomb in any way.

After two years, the guard is given a wreath pin that is worn on their lapel signifying they served as guard of the tomb. There are only 400 presently worn. The guard must obey these rules for the rest of their lives or give up the wreath pin.

The shoes are specially made with very thick soles to keep the heat and cold from their feet. There are metal heel plates that extend to the top of the shoe in order to make the loud click as they come to a halt.

There are no wrinkles, folds or lint on the uniform. Guards dress for duty in front of a full-length mirror. The first six months of duty a guard cannot talk to anyone nor watch TV.

All off duty time is spent studying the 175 notable people laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery. A guard must memorize who they are and where they are interred. Among the notables are: President Taft, Joe Lewis {the boxer} Medal of Honor winner Audie L. Murphy, the most decorated soldier of WWII and of Hollywood fame.

Every guard spends five hours a day getting his uniforms ready for guard duty.

In 2003 as Hurricane Isabelle was approaching Washington, DC, our US Senate/House took 2 days off with anticipation of the storm. On the ABC
evening news, it was reported that because of the dangers from the
hurricane, the military members assigned the duty of guarding the Tomb
of the Unknown Soldier were given permission to suspend the assignment. They
respectfully declined the offer, “No way, Sir!” Soaked to the skin, marching in the pelting rain of a tropical storm, they said that guarding the Tomb was not just an assignment, it was the highest honor that can be
afforded to a service person. The tomb has been patrolled continuously,
24/7, since 1930.

Bless and keep them.

A victory for voting rights.. a victory for all Americans.

The “Voter ID” argument has been going on for years. My question has always been why? Why is this even a debate? Why are you opposed to one person, one vote? Why are you opposed to the person voting is who they claim to be? ..you get my point.

It is simple. Your vote is the most valuable asset you have in the world of Democracy, so why shouldn’t it be protected? It is ridiculous that anyone can walk into a voting location and give a name and address (all of which is not hard to get) and then a red line is placed through it or checked off and BAM! that person regardless of who they are gets YOUR vote!

The left doesn’t want any ID required at the polls…. none. Why? The only reason anyone would want this because they intend to have people who either don’t vote or can’t vote to have a vote cast in their favor. We know buses are shipped in with college students or others to vote in districts they do not live. Just look at the 2016 Presidential Election in New Hampshire.

The common sense Conservative person expects and wants your identity to be established before that ballot is given to you. One Person One Vote!

The Left will tell us that the poor can’t afford ID. This argument is so ridiculous on its face it’s near impossible to respond. We require ID for so many … no, no.. for just about everything less important than your vote!

Are these people the Left is concerned about those on Welfare? They have IDs. Are these people the people in Housing? They have IDS. So who are these people who cannot afford an ID and where do they live? Humm.. are you trying to allow Aliens to vote? Not Immigrants..but Illegal Aliens? They are the only people in theory that would not have a valid ID or did I miss some group or persons you are so worried about?

The cost of an ID is the reason no to ask for an ID holds no water. We issue IDs and require IDs in all other areas of life. So ID up or don’t vote.

The decision, which came Tuesday and drew a brief dissent, will affect one November’s most critical Senate races.

A group of American Indians challenged the residential street address requirement, arguing that it imposes “impossible and severe burdens on the franchise for Native American voters,” as many live on reservations or otherwise lack ordinary street addresses. A federal judge agreed and prohibited the law.

The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals lifted that order, so the plaintiffs appealed to the Supreme Court, asking the justices to restore the injunction.

Trump has been making great strides in the Judicial system

Well, the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation received a lot, and I mean a lot of attention the Trumpster has been killing it in the Judicial system. He has been replacing Judges left and right. BO let so many vacancies in the entire system sit open and unfilled.

The Senate has confirmed 84 Trump nominees to the federal bench: 53 trial judges, 29 appeals judges, and two Supreme Court justices.

Trump set a record for appeals court confirmations during the first year of a presidency in January 2017.

This is how you be sure the entire Judicial system will be fair and unbiased … with Justices that understand the Constitution, what it means and that is the Law of the Land!

Obama’s lack of action in this area may very well be the best thing that could have happened. This gave President Trump the ability to fill these positions.. including 2 Supreme Court appointments, so far.

So this could very well be the best, longest lasting accomplishments of the Trump Presidency.

The Senate confirmed three judicial nominees to federal appeals courts this week, rounding out a record-setting year-long confirmation gamut.

The nominees, Leonard Grasz, Don Willett, and James Ho were appointed to the 5th and 8th U.S. Circuit Courts of Appeal. The Senate has cleared 12 nominations to the circuit courts since President Donald Trump assumed office, a record for the modern era.

All three nominees were confirmed on narrow party-line votes, and they mark the culmination of a remarkably successful confirmation effort. Trump has secured 12 circuit court confirmations this year, as well as Justice Neil Gorsuch’s confirmation to the Supreme Court. By way of comparison, former President Barack Obama had just three circuit court confirmations during the first year of his administration — former President George W. Bush had six, and former President Bill Clinton had three.

Save Notre Dame Alliance seeks to pack tonight’s Worcester City Council meeting

Save Notre Dame Alliance seeks to pack tonight’s Worcester City Council meeting
Alliance calls on city’s 11 councilors to have the courage
to keep their word, and save Notre Dame
Big, vocal turnout being organized for Council meeting,
which begins at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall
Hey, Worcester City Council! Have the courage to keep your word! Save Notre Dame!

No risk, no reward! The Save Notre Dame Alliance calls upon the Worcester City Council to keep its promise to this city, and do what it can to save Notre Dame des Canadiens. We ask the City Council to acquire Notre Dame, secure it from further decline, and aggressively market it to private developers with the added incentive of a tax-increment-financing package, or TIF, as well as the possibility of direct public subsidy (in exchange for public participation and use) and the support of a philanthropic campaign led by the Save Notre Dame Alliance and Preservation Worcester.

Most of the city councilors agree that if we fail to save Notre Dame, downtown would lose one of its best buildings, and we would regret it. Many have promised they will fight this battle to the end. Now is the time for them to back up their words with action. Notre Dame is irreplaceable. They can take the easy, safe path, and settle for mediocrity downtown. Or, they can take a risk, aim high, and demonstrate the leadership and vision to preserve what’s great about Worcester.

The mayor’s recent statement has been reported in North Carolina, Kansas, Texas, California, Washington state, the United Kingdom, and Germany. And, we hope our response will be, too. This should be news far beyond Worcester-and now it is-because this is one of the most spirited preservation battles underway anywhere in the country right now. And, for good reason. Just look at Notre Dame.

Historic, Denzel Martinez, 2018
The world is watching, Worcester. Are we really going to destroy this irreplaceable landmark, in front of everyone? Really? We should be better than that. We call upon the City Council to show that we are!

“If Notre Dame is destroyed, we lose something irreplaceable and uniquely ours, and all involved will go forward forever diminished by its loss,” states Ted Conna, co-leader of the Save Notre Dame Alliance. “If we unite and work together to save Notre Dame, Worcester shows the world what we’re made of, and what is possible when Hanover, the city, and its passionate citizens decide to work together. I would much prefer to be telling the latter story, and to be joining forces to breathe new life into Notre Dame, rather than fighting over its death sentence.”

Direct quotes from eight of Worcester’s 11 city councilors:

Cathy Weaver Taylor, Save Notre Dame, 2018

Mayor Joe Petty: “There isn’t a person in this city who wants to see Notre Dame come down. Not one person.” (4/24/18)

Mo Bergman: “I look at downtown as if you’re meeting somebody and making your first impression. When you take a building like Notre Dame away, it’s like meeting someone and seeing that their beautiful teeth now have a hole in them. Without Notre Dame, downtown Worcester will never be the same. Modern architecture in no way replaces the architecture of yesteryear. I’ve never heard a regret that we shouldn’t have saved a building. I have heard many regrets on buildings that we didn’t save.”

Now that he is out of office: The UNANSWERED MYSTERY OF THE CENTURY!!!

His 8 years of living in the White House is over.

This came from a union guy in Chicago who didn’t vote for Obama Very interesting perspective!

It will be interesting to see what they put in his “Library” about his early years now that he is out of office.

In a country where we take notice of many, many facets of our public figures’ lives, doesn’t it seem odd that there’s so little we know about Barack Obama?

For example, we know that Andrew Jackson’s wife smoked a corn cob pipe and was accused of adultery; Abe Lincoln never went to school; Jack Kennedy wore a back brace; Harry Truman played the piano.

As Americans, we enjoy knowing details about our news makers, but none of us know one single humanizing fact about the history of our own ex-president.

We are all aware of the lack of incontestable birth records for Obama; that document managing has been spectacularly successful.

There are however, several additional oddities in Obama’s history that appear to be as well managed as the birthing issue.

One other interesting thing… There are no birth certificates of his daughters that can be found?

It’s interesting that no one who ever dated him has shown up. The charisma that caused women to be drawn to him so strongly during his campaign, certainly would in the normal course of events, lead some lady to come forward, if only to garner some attention for herself. We all know about JFK’s magnetism, that McCain was no monk and quite a few details about Palin’s courtship and even her athletic prowess, Joe Biden’s aneurysms are no secret; look at Cheney and Clinton, we all know about their heart problems. Certainly Wild Bill Clinton’s exploits before and during his White House years, were well known. That’s why it’s so odd that not one lady has stepped up and said, “He was soooo shy…” or “What a great dancer..”

It’s virtually impossible to know anything about this fellow. Who was best man at his wedding? Start there. Then check groomsmen.

Then get the footage of the graduation ceremony. Has anyone talked to the professors? It is odd that no one is bragging that they knew him or taught him or lived with him.

When did he meet Michele, and how? Are there photos there? Every president gives to the public all their photos, etc. for their library, etc. What has he released? And who voted for him to be the most popular man in 2010? Doesn’t this make you wonder?

Ever wonder why no one ever came forward from Obama’s past saying they knew him, attended school with him, was his friend, etc?? Not one person has ever come forward from his past.

It certainly is very, very strange…

This should be a cause for great concern. To those who voted for him, you may have elected an unqualified, inexperienced shadow man. Have you seen a movie named “The Manchurian Candidate”

As insignificant as each of us might be, someone with whom we went to school will remember our name or face; someone will remember we were the clown or the dork or the brain or the quiet one or the bully or something about us.

George Stephanopoulos of ABC News said the same thing during the 2008 campaign.

He questions why no one has acknowledged he was in their classroom or ate in the same cafeteria or made impromptu speeches on campus. Stephanopoulos also was a classmate of Obama at Columbia — the class of 1984. He says he never had a single class with him.

He is such a great orator; why doesn’t anyone in Obama’s college class remember him? Why won’t he allow Columbia to release his records? Nobody remembers Obama at Columbia University.

Looking for evidence of Obama’s past, Fox News contacted 400 Columbia University students from the period when Obama claims to have been there… but none remembered him.

Wayne Allyn Root was, like Obama, a political science major at Columbia who also graduated in 1983. In 2008, Root says of Obama, “I don’t know a single person at Columbia that knew him, and they all know me. I don’t have a classmate who ever knew Barack Obama at Columbia, ever.”

Nobody recalls him Root adds that he was also, like Obama, Class of ’83 Political Science, and says, “You don’t get more exact or closer than that. Never met him in my life, don’t know anyone who ever met him. At class reunion, our 20th reunion five years ago, who was asked to be the speaker of the class? Me. No one ever heard of Barack!

And five years ago, nobody even knew who he was. The guy who writes the class notes, who’s kind of the, as we say in New York, ‘the macha’ who knows everybody, has yet to find a person, a human who ever met him.”

Obama’s photograph does not appear in the school’s yearbooks and Obama consistently declines requests to talk about his years at Columbia, provide school records, or provide the name of any former classmates or friends while at Columbia.

Some other interesting questions:

1.Why was Obama’s law license inactivated in 2002? It is said there is no record of him ever taking the Bar exam.

2…Why was Michelle’s law license inactivated by court order? We understand that it was forced to avoid fraud charges.

It is circulating that according to the U.S. Census, there is only one Barack Obama but 27 Social Security numbers and over 80 alias’ are connected to him.

The Social Security number he uses now originated in Connecticut where he is reported to have never lived. And was originally registered to another man (Thomas Louis Wood) from Connecticut, who died in Hawaii while on vacation there.

As we all know Social Security Numbers are only issued ‘once, they are not reused. No wonder all his records are sealed…

Please continue sending this out. Somewhere, someone has to know SOMETHING, before he reorganized Chicago?… SOMETHING!!! He just seemed to burst upon the scene at the 2004 Democratic Convention. ANYONE??? ANYWHERE??? ANYTHING???

I think soon much is going to come to light about this highly unqualified person who was President of the United States for 8 years. Soon, we will know how badly we were all doped and duped by this impostor who has basically, with much help from his minions, brought the greatest nation in history to its knees in ruins.

That will be his legacy.

He totally destroyed the Integrity, morals and Christian heritage of our once great country.

Who in the hell is he?

Note to Gov. Baker for Barbara Anderson again goes unanswered

From Chip Faulkner:

For the second year on the anniversary of her passing, the reminder note below was sent to Governor Baker at his home on April 6, in memory of Barbara Anderson and her dying wish — in fact the last paragraph in her final column. Three weeks have passed and so far we have again received no response, nor has the Amirault family.

In her final column for The Salem News and The Eagle-Tribune (“Fighting pirates with the Lost Boys,” April 11, 2016 — see below), published posthumously, Barbara closed with the final paragraph of her life:

“There will be no memorial service but if anyone wants to honor my memory, please remind Gov. Charlie Baker that when he was running for office, he promised my friend Gerald Amirault and his family that getting Gerald off parole and his ankle bracelet would be a first order of business. So far he has broken his promise, and keeping it is my dying wish.”

Another year has now passed since we reminded him and the governor’s deafening silence still reverberates.

Will Gov. Baker continue to allow this decades-old travesty of justice to live on and Barbara Anderson’s dying wish to die with her?

The question we asked last year perhaps has been answered. For the record, again we ask: Is Gov. Baker no more than a modern-day version of Pontius Pilate washing his hands of political courage, “I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it”?

April 6, 2018

Dear Governor Baker;

April 8th will mark the second year since Barbara passed away.

As I reminded you last year at this time, her dying wish, published posthumously in her final Salem News column (a copy enclosed) was that Gerald Amirault would soon be released from parole and that he would at last be free of his ankle bracelet and other restrictions.

Yet another year has gone by with no progress, no movement, no change, no news – not even a response since I wrote to you last year. Barbara was one of your earliest and strongest advocates. She put a lot of faith and confidence in you, Charlie, so I am pursuing this with you as she requested. So far I have kept all the promises I made to her before she left us.

We at CLT and our members have not forgotten Barbara, nor have the legion of taxpayers whom her ceaseless efforts benefitted during her three-plus decades of selfless advocacy on their behalf.

I hope you haven’t either, nor your promise.

For Barbara

With best regards,

Chip Ford

‘DIRTY DINNER’: White House Press Assoc. ‘APOLOGIZES’ for Dinner Disaster

Comedian Michelle Wolf performed at Saturday night’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington — but not all members of the audience stayed for the entire act.

Apparently offended by many of the comedian’s jabs at President Donald Trump and members of his administration, many attendees sat in silence, or simply got up and walked out, Politico reported.

“President Trump isn’t here, if you haven’t noticed,” Wolf, 32, a writer for Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah,” told the gathering. “I would drag him here myself, but it turns out the president of the United States is the one p—- you’re not allowed to grab.”

Wolf’s reference to the notorious “Access Hollywood” tape from 2005, which went public prior to the 2016 presidential election, was just one wisecrack that many in attendance did not appreciate.

Trump opted to skip Saturday night’s event — choosing instead to hold his own campaign-style rally in Michigan, one of the states that were key to Trump’s 2016 election victory.

“Is this better than that phony Washington White House Correspondents’ dinner?” Trump asked Saturday night, drawing cheers from the crowd in Washington, Mich., about 39 miles north of Detroit.

It marked the second year in a row that Trump declined to attend the event where politicians have long hobnobbed with members of the media, as the president continues to blast “fake news” and “dishonest” reporters.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders, however, attended as a representative of the Trump administration — and suffered through Wolf’s blistering critiques of her job performance, her appearance and even her Southern roots.

WH C wolf

Wolf took to Twitter to defend her jokes against Sanders. New York Times’ Maggie Haberman commended the White House press secretary for remaining at the Correspondents’ Dinner despite absorbing “intense criticism of her physical appearance, her job performance, and so forth.”

“Hey mags! All these jokes were about her despicable behavior. Sounds like you have some thoughts about her looks though?” Wolf tweeted.

Among Wolf’s less offensive one-liners:

— “Just a reminder to everyone, I’m here to make jokes, I have no agenda, I’m not trying to get anything accomplished, so everyone that’s here from Congress you should feel right at home.”

— “It is kinda crazy that the Trump campaign was in contact with Russia when the Hillary campaign wasn’t even in contact with Michigan.”

— “He wants to give teachers guns, and I support that because then they can sell them for things they need like supplies.”

Unlike last year, when Trump aides declined to attend, the Trump White House had its contingent, including counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.
WH C dinner

Donald J. Trump responed on Twitter of course:

While Washington, Michigan, was a big success, Washington, D.C., just didn’t work. Everyone is talking about the fact that the White House Correspondents Dinner was a very big, boring bust…the so-called comedian really “bombed.” @greggutfeld should host next year! @PeteHegseth

House passes $41 Billion budget — another $1B annual spending increase

From CLT’s April 29th

Ever wonder how many of those clamoring for a “millionaires tax” in Massachusetts are themselves willing to pay a few more bucks as their “fair share”?

The answer is, practically none — less than one-twentieth of one percent of Massachusetts taxpayers are voluntarily paying more for … the children … or the infrastructure … or something.

I know this because of that special box on state income tax forms. Checking this box allows the millions of Social Justice Warriors here in Massachusetts to reject paying the 5.1 percent rate favored by evil deplorables, irredeemables, bitter clingers and other assorted Trump voters.

How satisfying it must be for the “woke” among us to virtue-signal by voluntarily paying at the old Dukakis-era rate of 5.85 percent!

Considering recent election returns here, not to mention postings on social media, one would expect that at least two-thirds of the state’s filers would eagerly part with more of their hard-earned wages — er, strike that, Your Honor — I meant to say, the dividends from their trust funds or, if they’re illegal immigrants, their welfare handouts.

Surely these Democrats who endlessly talk the CNN/MSNBC talk would gladly walk the walk.

Actually no, they would not.

According to the state Department of Revenue’s most recent numbers, as of March 31, 2,027,928 income tax returns had been filed in the state and 894 taxpayers had opted to pay at Dukakis’ old 5.85 percent rate.

The added state revenue from those 894 generous souls came to, drumroll please, $121,361.

Those who push ‘millionaires tax’ don’t volunteer extra funds on state forms
By Howie Carr

A new group made up largely of organized labor has formed to oppose a proposed ballot question that would reduce the state sales tax by 20 percent, further solidifying the campaign as one pitting unions against Bay State retailers.

The Save Our Pubic Services Committee warned that reducing the state sales tax from 6.25 percent to 5 percent would eliminate $1.25 billion in annual tax revenues collected by the state, jeopardizing funding for local schools, health programs and roads.

“If the sales tax cut passes, communities will be forced to lay off teachers, police officers, and firefighters. Mental health and addiction treatment programs will close, spending on parks and environmental protection will be cut, and important road and transit construction projects will be delayed for years,” said Deb Fastino, executive director of the Coalition for Social Justice, in a statement.

The opposition committee was founded by 1199SEIU, A Better City, AFSCME Council 93, American Federation of Teachers-Massachusetts, Boston Teachers Union, Coalition for Social Justice, Jewish Alliance for Law and Social Action, Mass. AFL-CIO, Massachusetts Communities Action Network, Massachusetts Teachers Association, Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts, Transportation for Massachusetts, SEIU Local 509, United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1445….

The ballot question has been pitched by the Retailers Association of Massachusetts.

In addition to competition from online sellers, RAM President Jon Hurst has said small business owners faced added pressure from the state’s earned sick time law and other questions moving toward the ballot to increase the minimum wage to $15 and institute a paid family and medical leave program.

The sales tax cut question, according to Hurst, is a response to multiple policy changes in the offing that could negatively impact retailers.

“Our members, small and large basically need two things to be successful: 1. Higher sales; and 2. Lower costs,” Hurst wrote in a recent email to major state business groups and chambers of commerce. “And given a combination of increased competition coupled with an aggressive public policy agenda driven largely by unionized interests those two objectives are increasingly harder to obtain.”

Hurst, in the March 19 email obtained by the News Service, described the decision to go to the ballot as “taking some pages out of the opposition’s playbook.”

“We don’t take this effort lightly, and have only taken this extraordinary step to protect our members from government imposed discriminatory policies, and the costly, anti-small business agendas put forward by certain special interest labor groups,” Hurst wrote.

Sales tax cut will force layoffs and service cuts, new oppo group says

The House rejected a pair of major tax cuts on Monday, including one that may be headed for this year’s ballot.

Without debate or opposition, the House voted against proposals by Billerica Republican Rep. Marc Lombardo to reduce the sales tax (108) and income tax rates (109) to 5 percent.

Currently at 5.1 percent, the income tax remains on track to eventually fall to 5 percent – the level voters approved in 2000 – if the state hits economic triggers.

Retailers are pushing a ballot question this year to reduce the sales tax rate from 6.25 percent to 5 percent and establish an annual sales tax holiday. The Legislature in 2009 raised the sales tax from 5 percent to 6.25 percent.

Before the tax votes, Boston Democrat Rep. Angelo Scaccia also pulled back the curtain on the House’s private budget deliberations, saying there was not enough money available in the budget to fund various priorities as he argued unsuccessfully to curb or eliminate the film tax credit.

House rejects major reductions in income, sales taxes

The Massachusetts House on Wednesday approved legislation doing away with a restriction that prohibits families from receiving an extra $100 per-month cash assistance for a baby conceived while the family was receiving public assistance.

An amendment released just before 3:45 p.m. included language to circumvent the so-called Cap on Kids and instead mandate that “aid shall be provided for each such child or children without regard to whether the child was conceived or born after the parent began receiving aid.” …

The measure was included in a consolidated amendment put together by House Democrats after brokering deals with representatives who filed a cumulative 1,400 amendments to the House’s $40.9 billion fiscal year 2019 spending plan (H 4400). The leadership-backed amendments receive swift approval. The consolidated amendment that included the change to the cap was adopted by a 152-0 roll call vote Tuesday….

Rep. Marjorie Decker, who had also filed standalone legislation to eliminate the cap, told her colleagues shortly before the change was approved that this marked “probably one of my proudest days to be here.”

“Today, we have made an historic change. Twenty years ago there was a movement around the country that suggested that women of under resources and low-income women shouldn’t have children,” she said.

The Cambridge Democrat said she was a legislative aide at the State House when the cap was initially put in place. She said the debate included “wrath and disdain that was expressed about why low-income women choose to have children” and suggestions that women would have more babies in an attempt to secure additional state aid.

The House passed its roughly $41 billion fiscal 2019 budget on Thursday by a 150-4 vote, devoting billions towards perennial priorities and much smaller amounts toward pet projects favored by lawmakers.

Among the changes to the document made over the course of four days of debate is an increase in the earned income tax credit that assists the working poor, fewer restrictions on welfare for young families, and more tax credits to put land into conservation.

The budget bill now heads to the Senate. House lawmakers added $81.3 million in spending to the budget bill this week through amendments, according to Ways and Means, bringing the final tally to $41.065 billion

House passes $41B budget after four days of deliberation

By Tuesday, legislators who don’t already know whether they have challengers will find out if they do. It’s the biennial deadline for candidates to file nomination signatures and it coincides with another tradition: an uptick in lawmaking among incumbents eager to show constituents that they have accomplished something since the last election. The super-majorities long held by Democrats in both branches do not appear at risk this year, despite a session that started out with controversial pay raises and has proceeded at times at a halting pace, punctuated by leadership turmoil, turnover and near-chaos in the Senate….

While candidates will meet Tuesday’s deadline to file signatures – 300 for Senate candidates and 150 for House – the Legislature is not poised to act by Wednesday on a series of high-profile ballot questions, which means petitioners will be free to begin collecting a second and final round of signatures needed to lock their questions in for the November ballot….

Major bills laying out new health care policies and addressing opioid addiction and housing production remain stalled at the committee level heading into the final three months of formal sessions. It’s possible that the House will soon advance a health care proposal now that it has wrapped up its fiscal 2019 budget deliberations … Senate leaders plan to unveil their annual budget on May 10, with debate planned the week before Memorial Day Weekend….

Tax collections are beating estimates over the first eight months of fiscal 2018 – April collection numbers are due out next week – and that’s fueling both desire to spend more and calls for restraint.

Advances – Week of April 29, 2018

Wyoming in 2017 was the most politically conservative state in the U.S. for the second consecutive year. Forty-six percent of Wyoming residents identified as conservative and 13% as liberal, yielding a net-conservative score of +33. At the other end of the spectrum, Vermont and Massachusetts were the least conservative states, with liberals outnumbering conservatives by double-digit margins.

Nine states are more liberal than conservative. Within this group, Maryland, Washington and Connecticut barely lean that way, while Massachusetts and Vermont have double-digit liberal advantages.

The map below indicates how each state’s net-conservative score compares with the national average of +9 . . .

Ford B24 in under an hour! .. Go Henry!

The long hanger at Willow Run, Michigan has a 90 degree turn in it so Henry Ford would not have to pay taxes in the next county. That short end is being saved and restored today as a museum. The big hanger doors are still operational after all these years.

This is one of the best and most informative clips about a great American accomplishment, thanks to the Ford Motor Company during WWII.

A Ford Airplane! AMAZING!

Production began here 6 months BEFORE Pearl Harbor! Henry Ford was determined that he could mass produce bombers just as he had with cars, so he built the Willow Run assembly plant and proved it. This was the world’s largest building under one roof at the time. This film will absolutely blow you away — one B-24 every 55 minutes! — and Ford had its own pilots to test them. And no recalls!
